A perennial, tufted grass native to south-eastern Australia, Microlaena stipoides has fine, soft leaves and slender flowering stems that produce small seeds, typically flowering in spring and summer. It grows in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, open woodlands, and moist soils, thriving in full sun to partial shade.

Weeping Grass is valued in revegetation projects, native gardens, and low-maintenance landscapes for its drought tolerance, soil-stabilising roots, and provision of habitat and food for native fauna.
